1.000" 4130 Chromoly Tubing

One-inch OD is one of the most widely used 4130 sizes. It appears in light aircraft fuselage trusses, bicycle and motorcycle frames, suspension links and chassis bracing, usually in walls from 0.035" to 0.095".

Where 1.000" OD 4130 Tube Is Used

In tube-and-fabric aircraft, one-inch tube in thin walls forms many of the fuselage longerons and cross members. In bicycle building it is the classic top tube diameter. In motorsport it is used for door bars on lighter cars, seat-back braces, dash bars and suspension arms where a larger tube would not fit.

One inch is also a convenient telescoping size: a 0.875" OD tube slides inside 1.000" × 0.058" with a small clearance, which is useful for sleeved joints and repairs. Check the actual bore against the table before relying on a slip fit, because drawn tube has a tolerance on both OD and wall.

Ordering 1.000" OD Tubing

Give the OD, wall, condition and standard together, for example 1.000" × 0.065" 4130 normalized to ASTM A519. Aircraft work normally calls for the normalized condition; see 4130 aircraft tubing for the specification background. Compare neighbouring sizes on the size chart.

1.000" OD 4130 Tubing: Wall, Bore and Weight Table

The table lists the bore, metal cross-section and theoretical weight for 1.000" (25.40 mm) outside diameter across the walls normally requested in cold drawn seamless 4130.

Frequently Asked Questions

What wall thickness is common for 1.000" OD 4130 tube?

0.035", 0.049" and 0.065" are the walls most often requested at this diameter. Heavier walls such as 0.083" and 0.095" are used for suspension parts and bracing that carries higher loads.

What does 1.000" × 0.065" 4130 tubing weigh?

About 0.65 lb/ft, or 0.97 kg/m, calculated from nominal dimensions.

Will 0.875" tube fit inside 1.000" OD tube?

It fits inside a 1.000" × 0.058" tube, whose nominal bore is 0.884". Allow for manufacturing tolerance and check a sample before cutting a batch of sleeves.

What is 1.000" OD in millimetres?

25.4 mm. A 25 mm metric tube is slightly smaller and is not interchangeable in close fits.
