4130 Tubing Size Chart

A 4130 tubing size chart lists outside diameters against wall thicknesses. Mechanical tubing is always described by actual OD and wall, so once you know those two numbers you can work out the bore, the weight and the section properties.

Understanding the Range

The verified supply range spans from 0.250" OD up to 5.000" OD, with wall thicknesses from 0.035" up to 0.500".

Not every wall thickness is manufactured for every OD. For example, a 0.500" wall on a 0.500" OD tube is physically impossible (it would have no bore). Conversely, very thin walls (0.035") on very large ODs (4.000") are prone to crushing and are not standard catalog items.

Standard Size Matrix Reference

The following table indicates common OD groupings and their typical available wall thicknesses. This is for reference; specific availability must be confirmed at the RFQ stage.

How to Use the Size Chart

Start with what is fixed. If a rulebook or drawing sets a minimum OD and wall, those are your numbers. If the design is open, pick the diameter first, because stiffness rises much faster with diameter than with wall, then choose the lightest wall that meets strength, dent resistance and welding needs.

Individual pages give a full table of bore, section area and weight for each popular diameter: 1.000", 1.250", 1.500", 1.625", 1.750" and 2.000". Metric equivalents are on the dimensions chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate the ID (Inside Diameter) from this chart?

ID is calculated as: OD - (2 × Wall Thickness). For example, a 1.500" OD tube with a 0.120" wall has an ID of 1.500 - (2 × 0.120) = 1.260".

Are all combinations on a size chart available?

No. A chart shows the sizes that are made; stock varies. Common combinations are easier to obtain than unusual ones, so confirm availability when you enquire.

Is 4130 tubing sized like pipe?

No. Pipe uses nominal sizes and schedules. 4130 mechanical tubing is sized by actual outside diameter and wall thickness.

What is the most common 4130 tubing size?

Sizes between 1.000" and 1.750" OD in walls of 0.065" to 0.120" account for most structural use.

How do I find the bore from the size chart?

Subtract twice the wall from the outside diameter.
