1.500" 4130 Chromoly Tubing

1.500" OD is the workhorse diameter for 4130 chassis and cage fabrication. Many rulebooks name it for roll structures on lighter vehicles, and it is a standard choice for main chassis rails, suspension arms and subframes.

Where 1.500" OD 4130 Tube Is Used

In walls of 0.083", 0.095" and 0.120" this diameter covers most roll cage and spaceframe members. Lighter walls such as 0.058" and 0.065" are used for bracing and body supports where the tube is not part of the safety structure.

Rulebooks set a minimum OD and wall according to vehicle weight and class, and the figures differ between sanctioning bodies. Treat any size you read here as a reference only and confirm it against the current rulebook. The background is explained on the 4130 tubing for roll cages page.

Bending and Ordering

A centreline radius of around three times the tube diameter is a common starting point for rotary draw bending of 1.500" tube, with heavier walls tolerating tighter bends. Order in the normalized condition for welded structures and state the standard, usually ASTM A519 Grade 4130. If rules require a minimum wall, order a nominal wall that stays above that minimum after tolerance.

The table lists the bore, metal cross-section and theoretical weight for 1.500" (38.10 mm) outside diameter across the walls normally requested in cold drawn seamless 4130.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 1.500" × 0.095" 4130 tubing weigh?

About 1.43 lb/ft, or 2.12 kg/m, from nominal dimensions.

Which wall should I use for a 1.500" OD roll cage?

The rulebook for your class decides. 0.083" and 0.095" are frequently specified for 4130, but the requirement varies with vehicle weight and sanctioning body.

What is the bore of 1.500" × 0.120" tubing?

The nominal inside diameter is 1.260".

Is 1.500" tube the same as 1-1/2" pipe?

No. 1-1/2" nominal pipe measures 1.900" OD. Tube is ordered by its actual outside diameter.
