4130 Tubing Mill Sourcing
Mill sourcing means having 4130 tubing produced for your order instead of taking it from stock. It gives you the exact size, condition and specification you want, in exchange for a minimum quantity and a wait.
The Strategic Advantage of Mill Sourcing
Mill sourcing is not about speed; it is about control and cost-efficiency at scale. By placing a forward-looking production order, OEMs gain:
1. Cost Efficiency: Eliminating warehousing and secondary handling costs results in superior high-volume pricing.
2. Single Heat Lot: Large orders can be produced from a single melt (heat lot), ensuring absolute metallurgical consistency across thousands of parts, minimizing machining variance.
3. Custom Conditions: You can specify exact heat treatments (like a specific Quench & Temper target) or exact cut-lengths directly off the mill to eliminate secondary processing.
Planning for Mill Orders
Mill orders require sophisticated supply chain planning. Production slots must be booked, raw billets sourced, and shipping from global mills arranged. Buyers must account for lead times that can span several months and be prepared to take delivery of large minimum order quantities (MOQs).
| Factor | Mill Sourcing Characteristic |
|---|---|
| Volume | High (MOQs typically in tons, not feet) |
| Pricing | Most economical for high volume |
| Lead Time | Long-term (12-24+ weeks depending on mill schedules) |
| Consistency | Excellent (Single heat lot capability) |
| Specification | Highly customizable (Dimensions, Tolerances, Condition) |
What the Mill Needs to Know
A production order is made once, so the specification has to be complete and final. Set out the standard and grade, OD and wall with tolerances, the length range, the heat treatment condition, any mechanical property or hardness limits, the testing required and the certificate type. Add marking and packing requirements.
Build the lead time into your plan. Production, heat treatment, testing and shipping all take time, and a change after the order is placed may not be possible once the run has started. Where a project cannot wait, the early requirement can sometimes be met from stock while the mill order is made; see 4130 tubing from stock. How seamless tube is produced is described on the manufacturing page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I specify a non-standard specification, like EN 10297 25CrMo4, on a mill order?
Yes. One of the primary reasons for mill sourcing is the ability to specify exactly which standard the tube must be manufactured and certified to, whether that is ASTM, AMS, EN, or a proprietary internal company specification.
What is the minimum quantity for a mill order?
It depends on the size and the mill. The minimum is confirmed when the enquiry is reviewed.
Can I change a mill order after placing it?
Only before production begins, and not always then. Finalise the specification before ordering.
Is mill-sourced tube certified differently?
No. It is supplied with the same type of mill test certificate.
