EN 10204 3.1 4130 Tubing
EN 10204 is the European standard that defines the types of inspection document supplied with metallic products. Type 3.1 is the one most engineering buyers ask for, and it has a precise meaning.
EN 10204 Certificate Types
EN 10204 defines four main types of inspection documents:
| Certificate Type | Description | Independence Level |
|---|---|---|
| 2.1 — Declaration of conformance | Supplier declares conformance based on non-specific inspection | Low — no test results |
| 2.2 — Test report | Supplier provides test results from non-specific inspection | Low — non-specific testing |
| 3.1 — Inspection certificate (Type A) | Manufacturer's authorised representative certifies specific testing | Medium — manufacturer internal |
| 3.2 — Inspection certificate (Type B) | Certified by manufacturer AND independent body or buyer's rep | High — independent witness |
| 4130 standard requirement | 3.1 minimum for most industrial applications | 3.2 for some aerospace/defence programmes |
Specifying EN 10204 3.1 on a Purchase Order
To request EN 10204 3.1 documentation, state it explicitly on the purchase order: 'Mill Test Certificate to EN 10204 3.1 required'. This ensures the supplier provides a Type 3.1 certificate — not a lesser 2.2 test report. The MTC should be part of the delivery documentation package and should accompany the material to the point of use.
When 3.2 is Required
EN 10204 3.2 is required by some aerospace OEM programmes, prime contractors, and defence specifications. The additional independent witness adds cost and lead time. Specify 3.2 only if your quality plan or customer requirement explicitly demands it — 3.1 is adequate for most industrial and commercial applications.
What Makes a Certificate a Type 3.1
A 3.1 inspection certificate reports the results of tests carried out on the actual batch being delivered, known as specific inspection. It is validated by the manufacturer's authorised inspection representative, who must be independent of the manufacturing department. Those two features separate it from lower document types.
| Type | Basis of results | Validated by |
|---|---|---|
| 2.1 | No test results, a declaration of compliance only | Manufacturer |
| 2.2 | Results from non-specific inspection of similar products | Manufacturer |
| 3.1 | Results from specific inspection of the delivered batch | Manufacturer's independent inspection representative |
| 3.2 | Results from specific inspection, witnessed or verified | Manufacturer's representative and an independent or purchaser's inspector |
For 4130 tubing a 3.1 certificate shows at least the manufacturer, the standard and grade, dimensions, delivery condition, heat number and heat analysis, plus the results of any tests ordered. Using the document day to day is covered under 4130 tubing with MTC 3.1; independent verification under third party inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask for a 3.1 MTC after the order has been placed?
If the tubing has already been manufactured without 3.1 testing documentation, a retroactive 3.1 certificate cannot be produced — the testing must be performed at the time of manufacture. Always state the MTC requirement at the purchase order stage, not after delivery.
What is the difference between a 2.2 and a 3.1 certificate?
A 2.2 reports non-specific inspection results. A 3.1 reports tests on the delivered batch and is validated by an independent inspection representative of the manufacturer.
Who signs a 3.1 certificate?
The manufacturer's authorised inspection representative, independent of the manufacturing department.
