4130 Cold Rolled Tubing
Tube is not cold rolled the way sheet is, but there is a genuine cold rolling process for seamless tube called pilgering. Knowing the difference helps you read enquiries and mill documents correctly.
Cold Rolled vs. Cold Drawn
Cold rolling and cold drawing are distinct metalworking operations:
- Cold rolling reduces thickness by passing material between rolls. This is applied to flat products (sheet, strip) and, before forming, to strip that will be shaped into welded tube.
- Cold drawing reduces tube diameter and wall thickness by pulling the tube through a die over a mandrel at ambient temperature. This is the finishing operation for seamless tubes.
For seamless 4130 alloy tubing, the correct term is Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS). A buyer asking for 'cold rolled 4130 tubing' may in fact be seeking CDS seamless tube — or may be looking for DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) mild steel, which starts as cold-rolled strip.
| Process | Product | 4130 Application |
|---|---|---|
| Cold rolling | Flat products (sheet, strip) | Not applicable to 4130 tubing directly |
| Cold drawing | Seamless tubing (CDS) | This is the standard 4130 tubing form |
| Cold forming + ERW weld | Welded tube (DOM, ERW) | Not standard for 4130 — see welded page |
Cold Pilgering in Brief
In a pilger mill, a pair of grooved rolls rock back and forth over the tube while it sits on a tapered mandrel. Each stroke reduces both the diameter and the wall. A single pilger pass can achieve a far larger reduction than a single drawing pass, so mills often pilger first and draw afterwards to reach the final size.
From the buyer's side, the route does not change what you receive. The finished tube is still described by its standard, dimensions, tolerances and heat treatment condition, and ASTM A519 treats it as cold finished seamless tubing. There is no advantage in writing "cold rolled" on an order; specify the dimensions and condition you need and let the mill choose its process. The closely related product is described under 4130 cold drawn tubing and cold drawn seamless tubing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 'cold rolled 4130 tubing' a real product?
Not as a standard commercial tubing product. The correct form of cold-worked 4130 alloy tubing is Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS). If your drawing or specification says 'cold rolled 4130 tube', verify whether 'cold drawn seamless' was intended.
What is cold pilgering?
A cold rolling process for seamless tube in which grooved rolls reduce the diameter and wall over a mandrel.
Should I specify cold rolled or cold drawn?
Specify the standard, dimensions and condition. The mill selects the cold working route.
Is pilgered tube as accurate as drawn tube?
Yes. Both are cold finishing processes and the finished tube is supplied to the same tolerances.
