Why Welded 4130 Is Metallurgically Problematic

Standard ERW tube welding involves forming a flat steel strip into a circular cross-section and joining the longitudinal seam by electric resistance welding — a process that heats the steel very rapidly and allows it to cool quickly. For steels with high carbon equivalent values (CEV), this rapid thermal cycle creates a heat-affected zone that is prone to forming brittle martensite.

4130's carbon (approximately 0.28–0.33%), chromium (approximately 0.80–1.10%), and molybdenum (approximately 0.15–0.25%) additions give it a carbon equivalent value that makes ERW welding of the strip problematic without significant post-weld heat treatment — which defeats the economic purpose of the process.

For this reason, 4130 chromoly is industrially produced and supplied as seamless tubing.

DOM Tubing Is Not 4130

Some buyers conflate '4130 welded' with 'DOM' (Drawn Over Mandrel) tubing. DOM tubing is typically made from 1020 or similar mild steel strip, formed and ERW welded, then drawn over a mandrel to improve concentricity and compress the weld zone. DOM is not 4130 alloy. A buyer specifying 4130 chromoly must order seamless alloy, not DOM mild steel.

If a motorsport application specifies '4130 roll cage tubing', the correct product is seamless 4130 alloy — not DOM.

What to Specify Instead

If a buyer is seeking 4130 tubing and is comparing it to DOM or ERW mild steel: specify Cold Drawn Seamless 4130 (ASTM A519). If the application can use mild steel, DOM 1020 to ASTM A513 may be specified separately. The two products are not interchangeable on a 4130-specific blueprint.

Telling Welded From Seamless

A freshly welded tube has a visible seam, but once it has been drawn and heat treated the seam can be very hard to see. Do not rely on appearance.

• Read the certificate. It states the process of manufacture and the standard. ASTM A519 is a seamless standard; welded mechanical tube is made to different standards.
• Check the grade. Tube sold as DOM is usually a low carbon steel such as 1020 or 1026, not 4130.
• Look inside. A welded tube may show a faint line or a slight ridge along the bore.
• Ask directly. A supplier should state the process in writing.
