4130 Hot Finished Seamless Tubing
Hot finished seamless tubing is brought to size while the steel is hot. It covers the larger diameters and heavier walls of 4130 that cold drawing does not reach economically.
When HFS is the Right Choice
Hot Finished Seamless 4130 is appropriate when:
- The required OD is in the larger range where cold drawing equipment limits apply
- The application is heavy machining from solid tube wall, where the surface scale will be removed during machining and close tolerances on the as-received tube are less critical
- The application specifies or tolerates the broader dimensional tolerances characteristic of hot-finished product
For precision structural, aerospace, and thin-wall applications, Cold Drawn Seamless (CDS) remains the appropriate form.
Surface and Tolerance Differences
HFS tubing has a characteristic scaled, oxidised surface finish from the elevated-temperature processing. This scale must be removed by machining, sandblasting, or other means before welding or finishing. Dimensional tolerances are broader than CDS — wall thickness variation and OD tolerance are less precise in HFS form. Buyers specifying HFS for precision applications should confirm the tolerance class with the supplier.
| Parameter | HFS (Hot Finished Seamless) | CDS (Cold Drawn Seamless) |
|---|---|---|
| Surface | Scaled / oxidised | Bright, clean |
| OD tolerance | Broader | Tighter |
| Wall uniformity | Less precise | More precise |
| Weld prep | Scale removal required | Minimal prep |
| Typical use | Heavy machining, larger OD | Structural, aerospace, precision |
| Standard | ASTM A519 HFS section | ASTM A519 CDS section |
Allowing for Machining and Scale
Hot finished tube has a dark oxide scale and wider tolerances on diameter and wall than cold drawn tube. The wall can also be slightly eccentric. None of this matters if the tube is a blank for machining, provided enough stock is allowed.
When you order, give the finished OD, bore and length of the part. The starting tube is then chosen so that both surfaces clean up after the tolerances and any eccentricity are taken into account. Asking for a tube "to clean up at" your finished sizes is clearer than guessing a nominal size yourself.
Scale must be removed before welding and before most coatings, by blasting, grinding or pickling. If you need a clean surface and close tolerance in a size that exists both ways, choose cold drawn tubing. Heavy sections are discussed under heavy wall tubing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I weld 4130 HFS tubing without removing the scale?
No. Mill scale on hot-finished steel must be removed from the weld zone before welding. Scale contamination produces porosity, inclusions, and weakened welds. Grinding or machining the weld area is required.
Is hot finished 4130 cheaper than cold drawn?
Per kilogram it generally is, because it needs less processing. The saving may be offset by machining if tolerances are wide.
Why is hot finished tube dark?
It carries oxide scale formed while the steel was hot.
Can hot finished tube be welded?
Yes, after the scale is removed from the joint area.
