4130 Mechanical Tubing

Mechanical tubing is tube intended for structural and machined parts, as opposed to tube for carrying fluids under pressure. 4130 to ASTM A519 is a mechanical tubing product.

Mechanical Tubing vs. Pressure Tubing

The distinction between mechanical and pressure tubing is important for procurement:

- Mechanical tubing (ASTM A519): Designed for structural, mechanical, and engineering applications. Tolerances and testing are calibrated for dimensional accuracy and mechanical property consistency. Not designed or tested for pressure containment service.

- Pressure tubing (ASTM A519 is sometimes used, but dedicated pressure tube standards such as ASTM A213 are more appropriate for high-pressure applications): Designed to contain internal pressure — additional testing requirements may apply.

For roll cages, chassis, aircraft airframes, and similar structural applications, mechanical tubing per ASTM A519 is the correct product.

What Is and Is Not Certified by Default

A mechanical tubing standard is built around chemistry and dimensions. The mill test certificate always reports the heat analysis and confirms the size and condition. Tensile properties, hardness and non-destructive testing are not automatically part of the order; they are supplied when the purchaser asks for them.

That matters when a design relies on a minimum strength. If your calculations or your rulebook assume a particular yield or tensile value, request mechanical testing on the order so that the certificate carries the results. Typical uses of 4130 mechanical tubing include vehicle chassis and cages, aircraft structures, shafts, rollers, bushings, cylinder components and tooling. Property data is on the mechanical properties page, and the standard is described under ASTM A519 4130 tubing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ASTM A519 mechanical tubing be used in pressure systems?

ASTM A519 mechanical tubing is not specifically designed or tested for pressure containment service. For pressure-critical applications, the applicable pressure vessel or pressure tubing standard should be specified (e.g., ASTM A213 for boiler/heat exchanger tubes). Verify requirements with the responsible engineer.

Are mechanical properties shown on the certificate?

Only if mechanical testing was specified on the order. Chemistry is always reported.

What is mechanical tubing used for?

Structural members and machined parts: frames, shafts, sleeves, rollers and similar components.

Is mechanical tubing pressure tested?

Not by default. Pressure or non-destructive testing can be added to the order.

What standard covers 4130 mechanical tubing?

ASTM A519 for seamless mechanical tubing.
