Mixed Size 4130 Tubing Orders
Few projects use one tube size. A chassis may need five or six, a machine even more. A mixed size order brings them together in one purchase, one shipment and one set of documents.
Benefits of Mixed-Size Consolidated Orders
Consolidating all required 4130 sizes into a single order provides:
1. Unified MTC package: All sizes with their respective MTCs in one documentation set — easier for project records and quality audits.
2. Single delivery point: One shipment rather than multiple arrivals — simplifies receiving inspection.
3. Cost efficiency: Volume across multiple sizes may improve pricing per size.
4. Documentation simplicity: One purchase order, one supplier, one invoice — less administrative overhead.
How to Prepare a Mixed-Size Order
List every required tube size separately, with OD, wall, footage, and standard. Submit as a single RFQ.
| Line | OD | Wall | Standard | Footage | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.750" | 0.120" | ASTM A519 | 50 ft | As-drawn |
| 2 | 1.500" | 0.083" | ASTM A519 | 80 ft | As-drawn |
| 3 | 1.250" | 0.065" | ASTM A519 | 40 ft | As-drawn |
| 4 | 1.000" | 0.065" | ASTM A519 | 30 ft | As-drawn |
| 5 | 0.750" | 0.049" | ASTM A519 | 20 ft | As-drawn |
| Note | Include MTC 3.1 for all sizes |
Laying Out a Mixed Size List
A clear list prevents mistakes. Use one line per size, written the same way each time: OD, wall, condition, then quantity and length. For example: 1.750" × 0.095" normalized, 60 ft in random lengths; 1.000" × 0.065" normalized, 12 pieces at 36". Keep the units consistent through the list.
Each size in the order has its own heat number and its own mill test certificate, so a six-size order arrives with six certificates. Ask for the bundles to be tagged by size so they can be checked off against the list at goods-in. If some sizes are available and others need sourcing, you can choose between one complete delivery and part shipments. For cut pieces see cut to length tubing; for larger programmes see project specific supply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will all sizes in a mixed order come from the same heat lot?
Not necessarily. Different OD/wall sizes are drawn from different heats. Each size will have its own MTC with its own heat lot number. This is normal and acceptable — MTC traceability is maintained per size.
Is there a limit to how many sizes can be combined?
No fixed limit. Send the full list and each size will be confirmed.
Do I get one certificate for the whole order?
You receive a mill test certificate for each size, identified by its heat number.
Can cut pieces and full lengths be mixed in one order?
Yes. State for each size whether you want full lengths or pieces cut to a list.
