Schedule 10 4130 Tubing
Schedule 10 is a light-wall pipe designation. It is not a 4130 tubing size, but enquiries often use the term, so it helps to know what dimensions are really being asked for.
Why Schedules Don't Apply to 4130 CDS
The pipe schedule system (Schedule 5, 10, 40, 80, 160, etc.) is a wall thickness designation specific to pipe in the NPS system. In the NPS system, a 1" NPS pipe does not have a 1.000" OD — it has a 1.315" OD. The schedule number then defines the wall, not the OD.
4130 chromoly CDS tubing is a mechanical tube: it is sized by actual OD × actual wall. A 1.000" OD × 0.065" wall 4130 CDS tube has an actual OD of 1.000" and an actual wall of 0.065". There is no 'schedule' for this product.
| System | Sizing Method | 4130 CDS Application |
|---|---|---|
| NPS / Pipe Schedule | Nominal bore + Schedule (wall class) | Not applicable |
| Mechanical tube (OD × Wall) | Actual OD × actual wall | Correct for 4130 CDS |
| Example | 1.000" OD × 0.065" wall 4130 CDS | This is the correct specification format |
Schedule 10 Dimensions by Pipe Size
A schedule has no single wall thickness. The wall changes with the nominal pipe size, and the outside diameter is fixed for each size, as the table shows for the light-wall series.
| Nominal pipe size | Outside diameter | Schedule 10 wall |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | 0.840" (21.3 mm) | 0.083" (2.11 mm) |
| 3/4" | 1.050" (26.7 mm) | 0.083" (2.11 mm) |
| 1" | 1.315" (33.4 mm) | 0.109" (2.77 mm) |
| 1-1/2" | 1.900" (48.3 mm) | 0.109" (2.77 mm) |
| 2" | 2.375" (60.3 mm) | 0.109" (2.77 mm) |
| 3" | 3.500" (88.9 mm) | 0.120" (3.05 mm) |
| 4" | 4.500" (114.3 mm) | 0.120" (3.05 mm) |
To order 4130 for a structural or mechanical part drawn in pipe terms, convert to the actual OD and wall and ask for the nearest tube size. For pressure piping, buy pipe to a piping standard instead; mechanical tubing is not a substitute. See also Schedule 40 and Schedule 80.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I have a pipe schedule drawing, how do I convert it to 4130 tube specification?
Identify the NPS designation and schedule, then look up the actual OD and wall from an NPS pipe data table. The actual OD will be the OD of the pipe, which you can then specify as the OD of the mechanical tube (if that OD is within the 4130 CDS range). Confirm with the responsible engineer that mechanical tube is appropriate as a substitute for pipe.
Is there such a thing as Schedule 10 4130 tubing?
Not as a standard product. 4130 mechanical tubing is sold by OD and wall. A Schedule 10 requirement has to be converted into those dimensions.
What is the wall thickness of Schedule 10 pipe?
It varies with pipe size, for example 0.109" for 1" and 2" pipe and 0.120" for 3" and 4" pipe.
Specify 4130 by OD and Wall
Convert your pipe schedule requirement to actual OD and wall, then provide for a 4130 CDS quotation.
