4130 Tubing — 0.120" Wall

0.120" wall, equal to 3.05 mm or 11 gauge, is the heavy end of the common structural walls. It is used for cages on heavy vehicles, highly stressed chassis parts and components that will be machined or threaded.

Where a 0.120" Wall Is Used

Truck and off-road cages, axle trusses, link bars and tow points are typical. The wall is thick enough to take a tapped bung, a weld-in insert or a machined end, which makes it useful for adjustable links.

Many rulebooks that accept thinner 4130 still accept 0.120", so it is a safe choice where a car may be entered under more than one set of rules. The penalty is weight: at 1.750" OD it is about 25 percent heavier than 0.095".

Welding Heavier Wall

From about this thickness upwards, pre-heating the joint before welding becomes normal practice for 4130, and slow cooling matters more. Thick-to-thin joints need care so the thinner part is not overheated. See the welding guide and, for thicker sections, heavy wall tubing.

0.120" Wall 4130 Tubing: OD, Bore and Weight Table

The table shows how a 0.120" (3.05 mm) wall behaves across common outside diameters. The OD-to-wall ratio is a quick guide to how easily the tube bends and how readily it dents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 0.120" wall in millimetres and gauge?

0.120" equals 3.05 mm and corresponds to 11 gauge (BWG).

How much does 1.500" × 0.120" 4130 tubing weigh?

About 1.77 lb/ft, or 2.63 kg/m, from nominal dimensions.

Should 0.120" wall 4130 be pre-heated for welding?

Pre-heat is commonly applied at this thickness to slow the cooling rate. Follow your qualified weld procedure for the exact temperature.

Can 0.120" wall tube be threaded?

It is thick enough for a welded-in threaded bung or insert, which is the usual method for adjustable links.
