4130 Heavy Wall Tubing
Heavy wall 4130 tubing, roughly 0.188" wall and above, is used for highly loaded structural members and as hollow stock for machined parts such as cylinders, sleeves, bushes and couplings.
Applications for Heavy-Wall 4130
Heavy-wall 4130 is used in: thick-wall cylinder bodies (machined from tube stock); roll cage main hoops in heavier vehicle classes requiring larger cross-section; hydraulic actuator tubes; heavy structural columns and frame members; and machined flanges and collars where the tube wall provides the machining stock for the finished profile.
Hot Finished vs. Cold Drawn for Heavy Wall
For very heavy walls (typically above 0.250"), Hot Finished Seamless (HFS) may be more practical than CDS, particularly for larger ODs. The cold drawing process becomes progressively more demanding as wall-to-OD ratio increases. For heavy-wall requirements, confirm whether CDS or HFS is available for the specific OD/wall combination at the RFQ stage.
| Parameter | Heavy-Wall 4130 Consideration |
|---|---|
| Heavy wall range | ~0.120" and above — context-dependent |
| Very heavy wall | 0.250"–0.500" — may be HFS; confirm CDS availability |
| Primary use | High-load structural, machining stock, cylinder bodies |
| Form | CDS for precision; HFS for larger/heavier sections |
| Standard | ASTM A519 |
| Documentation | MTC 3.1 confirming actual wall — critical for machining stock |
Machining and Heat Treating Heavy Wall Tube
When the tube is a machining blank, order by the finished part. Give the final OD, bore and length so the starting size has stock to clean up, bearing in mind that hot finished tube has wider tolerances and a scaled surface.
Annealed material machines most easily. If the finished part needs high strength it is usually machined close to size, quenched and tempered, then finished. Thick sections cool more slowly during quenching, so the properties reached depend on the wall; discuss the target hardness before ordering. Welding heavy wall 4130 requires pre-heat and controlled cooling, as described in the welding guide. Conditions are compared in the heat treatment guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the maximum wall available in 4130 CDS tubing?
The verified maximum wall in the standard supply range is 0.500". For specific OD/wall combinations at the heavier end of the range, confirm availability at the RFQ stage.
Is heavy wall 4130 tubing cheaper than boring solid bar?
Often, because far less metal is removed. The saving depends on the size, quantity and how close the available tube is to the finished part.
Can heavy wall 4130 tubing be welded?
Yes, with pre-heat, a suitable filler and slow cooling. Thick sections are more prone to hard, brittle zones if they cool quickly.
What is the heaviest regular 4130 wall?
Regular supply extends to about 0.500". Heavier sections are handled as a specific enquiry.
