4130 Chromoly for Perforated Tubing

Perforated tube, used in filters, silencers and strainers, is normally made by rolling and welding perforated sheet. Seamless 4130 tube is not produced in perforated form.

Is 4130 Suitable for Perforated Tubing?

Perforated tubing is typically manufactured from welded strip that is punched before rolling, or by laser-cutting thin-wall tube. It is used in filtration, silencing, and decorative applications.

4130 tubing is produced as a solid seamless mechanical tube for structural integrity. Perforating a high-strength structural tube creates thousands of stress risers, entirely defeating the purpose of specifying a high-yield, fatigue-resistant alloy like 4130. If a perforated tube is required, mild steel or stainless steel are the standard choices.

How Perforated Tube Is Normally Made

Most perforated tube starts as flat sheet that is punched with a hole pattern, rolled into a tube and seam welded. The sheet is usually mild steel, galvanised steel, stainless steel or aluminium, chosen for the fluid and temperature.

Filters and strainersStainless steel

If a design needs holes in a high-strength 4130 tube, for a lightened link or a vented part for instance, the holes are drilled or laser cut into plain seamless tube by the fabricator. Bear in mind that holes reduce the strength of a tube and concentrate stress, so the pattern should be part of the engineering design. Plain tube sizes are listed in the size chart, and cut pieces can be supplied as described under cut to length.

Specifying Holes in a 4130 Tube

If you ask a fabricator to perforate 4130 tube, give the hole diameter, the spacing along and around the tube, the length of the perforated zone and the distance from each end to the first hole. Say whether burrs must be removed inside the bore. Laser cutting leaves a small heat-affected edge on a hardenable steel; for highly stressed parts, drilling or a post-cutting heat treatment may be preferable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is perforated 4130 tubing a stock product?

No. 4130 is supplied as plain seamless tube. Perforation is a fabrication step.

Can holes be drilled in 4130 tubing?

Yes. It can be drilled or laser cut, preferably in the annealed or normalized condition.

Do holes weaken a 4130 tube?

Yes. Material is removed and stress concentrates around each hole, so the effect should be assessed in the design.

Is laser cutting suitable for 4130 tube?

Yes, though it leaves a narrow hardened edge, which matters on highly stressed parts.
