4130 Chromoly for U-Shaped Tubing
"U-shaped tubing" can mean two different things: a structural tube bent into a U, such as a roll hoop, or the U-bend tubes of a heat exchanger. 4130 suits the first and not the second.
Is 4130 Suitable for U-Shaped Tubing?
U-tubes are primarily used in shell-and-tube heat exchangers, manufactured to strict bending radii from heat exchanger tube standards (e.g., ASTM A213 or A249).
While 4130 mechanical tubing can be bent into a U-shape by a fabricator for structural purposes, it is not supplied from the mill as a pre-formed U-tube heat exchanger product. If the application is a heat exchanger, 4130 is the wrong material specification.
Structural U-Bends in 4130
4130 round tube bends well in the normalized or annealed condition using mandrel or rotary draw equipment. Roll hoops, bumpers, grab rails and frame loops are all made this way. To order, give the OD and wall, the centreline radius, the leg lengths and the overall width, and order a length that lets the part be bent from one piece.
Tight radii and thin walls are the difficult combination; a heavier wall or larger radius gives a cleaner bend. After bending, the tube is slightly thinner on the outside of the bend, which rulebooks may take into account.
U-Tubes for Heat Exchangers
U-tube bundles are made from heat exchanger tube grades, bent to precise radii and often stress relieved at the bend.
| Meaning of U-shaped tubing | Correct material |
|---|---|
| Structural hoop or frame loop | 4130 seamless tube to ASTM A519 |
| Heat exchanger U-tube bundle | Tubes to ASTM A179, A213 or similar |
| Hydraulic line bend | Hydraulic line tube to the system standard |
For cage hoops see 4130 roll cage tubing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can 4130 tubing be bent into a U shape?
Yes. Normalized or annealed 4130 bends well with proper tooling and a suitable radius.
Is 4130 used for heat exchanger U-tubes?
No. Those are made from heat exchanger tube standards in carbon, alloy or stainless steel.
Do you supply pre-bent 4130 tubes?
Tube is supplied straight, in random or cut lengths. Bending is normally done by the fabricator.
What is the minimum bend radius for 4130 tube?
It depends on diameter, wall and tooling. A centreline radius of about three times the OD is a common starting point for rotary draw bending.
Should 4130 be bent hot or cold?
Cold bending with proper tooling is normal for thin-wall tube. Do not heat and quench it.
What should I specify for a 4130 tube that will be bent?
OD, wall, normalized or annealed condition, and a length that allows the part to be bent from one piece.
