4130 Chromoly for Boiler Tubing
4130 is a chromium-molybdenum steel, and boilers use chromium-molybdenum tubes, so the two are often confused. They are different products made to different standards, and one cannot stand in for the other.
Is 4130 Suitable for Boiler Tubing?
Boiler tubes are governed by specific pressure and high-temperature standards, such as ASTM A213 or ASTM A192. These standards mandate specific manufacturing, testing, and inspection protocols for steam generation.
4130 tubing manufactured to ASTM A519 is a mechanical tube, not a boiler tube. It is not rated, tested, or certified for use as a boiler tube. Using mechanical tubing in a boiler application violates pressure vessel codes and poses a severe safety risk.
What to Specify for Boiler Service
Boiler and superheater tubes are bought to pressure tube standards that fix the chemistry, heat treatment, hydrostatic or non-destructive testing and allowable stresses at temperature. The chromium-molybdenum grades used in boilers have lower carbon than 4130, which makes them easier to weld and more stable over long periods at high temperature.
| Duty | Standards normally used |
|---|---|
| Carbon steel boiler tubes | ASTM A192, ASTM A210 |
| Alloy steel boiler and superheater tubes | ASTM A213 grades such as T11, T22 and T91 |
| Alloy steel pipe for high temperature | ASTM A335 grades such as P11 and P22 |
Use 4130 tubing for the structural and mechanical parts around a boiler, such as supports, linkages and machined fittings that are not pressure parts. For how mechanical tube differs from pressure tube see 4130 mechanical tubing.
Why the Distinction Matters
Boiler tubes operate for years at high temperature and pressure, and a failure releases steam with great force. For that reason boiler codes allow only materials made to listed standards, with each tube tested and allowable stresses defined at temperature. An inspector will reject a pressure part whose certificate shows a mechanical tubing standard, whatever the grade. Substituting on the basis that both steels are chromium-molybdenum is therefore both unsafe and non-compliant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can 4130 tubing be used as a boiler tube?
No. 4130 to ASTM A519 is mechanical tubing. It is not made, tested or certified to boiler tube standards and must not be used for boiler pressure parts.
Which chrome-moly tubes are used in boilers?
Grades such as T11 and T22 to ASTM A213. They are chromium-molybdenum steels with lower carbon than 4130.
Where can 4130 be used on boiler equipment?
In non-pressure parts such as frames, supports and mechanical components, where its strength is useful.
Is T22 the same as 4130?
No. T22 is a 2.25 percent chromium, 1 percent molybdenum boiler grade with low carbon.
Who decides which material a boiler may use?
The boiler code and the design authority. Only listed materials are permitted.
