4130 Tubing — 0.065" Wall
0.065" wall, equal to 1.65 mm or 16 gauge, is the general-purpose wall in 4130. It is the usual choice for suspension arms, subframes, bracing and brackets, where the tube has to take real load and survive workshop handling.
Where a 0.065" Wall Is Used
At 1.000" to 1.500" OD this wall makes A-arms, radius rods, seat frames and engine cradles. It is also common for secondary cage members where the rules allow a lighter tube than the main hoop.
The wall is thick enough to accept a tube notcher cleanly and to resist denting from normal knocks, while staying light. Many builders standardise on it for everything that is not governed by a rulebook minimum.
Fabrication Notes
TIG is preferred, and the wall is heavy enough to weld without the burn-through risk of thinner tube. Pre-heat is not normally needed at this thickness in a warm workshop. Order normalized material for welded structures, and see normalized 4130 tubing for what that condition means.
0.065" Wall 4130 Tubing: OD, Bore and Weight Table
The table shows how a 0.065" (1.65 mm) wall behaves across common outside diameters. The OD-to-wall ratio is a quick guide to how easily the tube bends and how readily it dents.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is 0.065" wall in millimetres and gauge?
0.065" equals 1.65 mm and corresponds to 16 gauge (BWG).
How much does 1.250" × 0.065" 4130 tubing weigh?
About 0.82 lb/ft, or 1.23 kg/m, from nominal dimensions.
Is 0.065" wall good for suspension arms?
It is widely used for them, but the right wall depends on the loads, the arm length and the diameter. Have the design checked rather than copying a size.
Can 0.065" wall be MIG welded?
It can, with care, but TIG gives better control on 4130 at this thickness.
