4130 Tubing — 0.083" Wall

0.083" wall, equal to 2.11 mm or 14 gauge, is the wall most closely linked with chromoly roll structures. Several rulebooks name it as the minimum for 4130 cage tubing where mild steel would need a heavier wall.

Where a 0.083" Wall Is Used

Paired with 1.500" and 1.625" OD it forms main hoops, halo bars and frame rails in many drag racing and circuit chassis. The same wall at smaller diameters is used for highly loaded suspension and steering parts.

The appeal of 0.083" in 4130 is the weight saved against a thicker mild steel tube of the same diameter. That saving is only valid if the material really is 4130, so keep the mill test certificate with the car's paperwork.

Buying to a Rulebook Minimum

Tube is made to a tolerance, so a nominal 0.083" wall can measure slightly under at some point. If inspectors check wall thickness with an ultrasonic gauge, confirm that the tolerance of the tube you buy keeps it above the required minimum. The roll cage size guide covers this in more detail.

0.083" Wall 4130 Tubing: OD, Bore and Weight Table

The table shows how a 0.083" (2.11 mm) wall behaves across common outside diameters. The OD-to-wall ratio is a quick guide to how easily the tube bends and how readily it dents.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 0.083" wall in millimetres and gauge?

0.083" equals 2.11 mm and corresponds to 14 gauge (BWG).

How much does 1.625" × 0.083" 4130 tubing weigh?

About 1.37 lb/ft, or 2.04 kg/m, from nominal dimensions.

Does 0.083" wall 4130 need pre-heat before welding?

At this thickness pre-heat is often not required in a warm shop, but cold material should be warmed first. Follow your weld procedure.

Which diameters are usually paired with 0.083" wall?

1.500" and 1.625" OD are the most common pairings for chromoly cage and chassis tube.
