4130 Pressure Tubing
4130 is strong enough to contain high pressure, and it is used for that purpose in components such as cylinders and tool bodies. What it lacks as standard mechanical tube is a pressure rating, so the design and testing have to supply it.
Pressure Calculation Basics
The working pressure of a tube is primarily a function of wall thickness, OD, material yield or tensile strength, the applicable design code, and the safety factor required. The fundamental relationship — the Barlow formula or the code-specific equivalent — provides allowable working pressure as a function of these parameters. For a given OD and material, increasing wall thickness increases the pressure rating; using a higher-strength material (such as 4130 vs. mild steel) also allows higher pressure for the same wall.
Standards for Pressure Service
ASTM A519 mechanical tubing is not a pressure vessel standard. For pressure-critical applications, the engineer must determine the applicable code — ASME B31.3 (Process Piping), ASME Section VIII Division 1 (Pressure Vessels), or an application-specific standard — and ensure the tube material, condition, and testing meet that code's requirements. ASTM A519 may be acceptable as the base material; however, additional testing or inspection requirements may apply under the pressure code.
| Parameter | Pressure Application Consideration |
|---|---|
| Form | Cold Drawn Seamless — mandatory for pressure service |
| Standard | ASTM A519 — verify acceptability under applicable pressure code |
| Wall | Determined by design pressure, OD, safety factor — engineering calculation |
| Condition | Normalized or as specified — condition affects allowable stress |
| Inspection | Applicable code may require hydrostatic test or NDE |
| Documentation | MTC plus any code-required third-party inspection |
| Note | Consult pressure system engineer before specifying |
What a Pressure Design Needs From the Tube
- Guaranteed properties. Order with mechanical testing so the certificate states the actual yield and tensile strength.
- Minimum wall. Design on the minimum wall after tolerance, not the nominal wall.
- Sound material. Specify non-destructive testing such as ultrasonic or eddy current inspection.
- Proof testing. Pressure test the finished component as the code requires.
- Condition. Fix the heat treatment, since strength depends on it.
The governing code also decides whether 4130 is a permitted material at all. Piping and boiler codes list the materials and standards they accept, and general-purpose mechanical tube is often not among them. For pressure piping, use pipe and tube made to the listed pressure standards. For engineered components, 4130 can be qualified through design and testing. See 4130 tubing for pressure applications and inspection and testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use 4130 ASTM A519 tube for a boiler pressure vessel?
ASTM A519 is a mechanical tubing standard. Boiler and pressure vessel applications are governed by ASME codes, which have specific approved material lists. ASTM A519 may not be the appropriate specification for ASME boiler work — consult an ASME-qualified engineer.
Does 4130 tubing have a pressure rating?
Not as supplied. The allowable pressure comes from a design calculation to the applicable code.
What tests should I request for pressure-related parts?
Mechanical testing and non-destructive testing of the tube, and a pressure test of the finished component.
